Jump Starting a Car.png
There’s no denying a dead battery is an unwelcome surprise. However, if you know how to appropriately respond, it doesn’t have to completely disrupt your day. We encourage you to follow these tips from our Alfa Romeo service experts at Helfman Alfa Romeo.

What Causes a Dead Battery?

There are a number of things that can affect your car battery:

  • You left your headlights or interior lights on
  • Your connections are loose or corroded
  • You’re frequently taking short drives and not giving your battery time to charge
  • Your battery is over three years old
  • It’s extremely cold or hot outside

How Do I Jump-Start My Car?

You’ll need another vehicle or portable charger to jump-start your vehicle, along with some jumper cables. Attach the jumper cables, in the following order, to jump your car:

  • First, attach the red clamp to the positive terminal of your dead battery
  • Next, attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the working battery
  • Then, attach the black clamp to the negative terminal of the working battery
  • Finally, attach the other black clamp to an unpainted metal component of your car

Start the working car, then start your vehicle. Once your car’s running, you can carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were placed. It’s a good idea to take a short drive in your vehicle or at least leave it running a few minutes.

If you ever have a dead battery, it’s important to make sure it was just a fluke and that you can rely on it in the future. Visit our dealership for an inspection or to order a new battery. We have an extensive selection of genuine Alfa Romeo parts in Houston, TX and can help today!
