If you're filing a tax return, does your Alfa Romeo lease factor in? At Helfman Alfa Romeo of Houston, we field plenty of questions about leases and financing, and around tax season many drivers want to know the same thing. Can my car lease somehow impact my tax refund or what I owe?

The short answer is yes, your car might end up impacting your taxes and there could even be tax benefits to take advantage of. Generally, there are two ways to write off some costs of vehicle ownership.

Business Owners and Work Vehicles

In some cases, you might be able to write off a portion of the costs of your vehicle if you can show that you're using it for business. Most of the time, you won't be able to convince the IRS that you're using your Alfa Romeo car solely for business, so you would have to write off a portion of expenses instead.

You may be able to write off some of the mileage traveled and fueling costs, or a significant portion of your monthly lease payment.

The SALT Deduction

SALT stands for state and local tax deduction. When you buy or lease a car in Texas, you're going to end up paying state taxes on your purchase. Sometimes it can be worthwhile to deduct that tax paid on your tax return.

The SALT deduction has a limit, and you might be better off taking the standard deduction instead of itemizing and trying to use this type of deduction. What works best for you is going to depend a lot on your income, expenses, and a variety of other factors. It’s best to get the advice of a tax professional before filing.
