Nothing can ruin a road trip quite like a flat tire. Fortunately, one isn't actually that hard to deal with if you're prepared and listen to these tips from the Alfa Romeo service experts here at Helfman Alfa Romeo of Houston. Here's what you need to know.
Preparing for a Flat Tire
No one wants a flat tire but being prepared to deal with one is a wise idea. If you're going to take a long trip, make sure that you have some important supplies on hand.
You need a jack and tire iron, obviously, but you should also have some reflectors or reflective flags, in case you break down at night. Also check to make sure that your spare is actually in your car and that it's properly inflated.
Changing Your Tire
If you do get a flat, pull over right away and get ready to replace it. You'll want to:
- Turn on your hazards
- Put down your reflective items, if you have them
- Loosen the lugs on the flat tire
- Position the jack and lift the car until it's completely off the ground
- Remove the lugs and place them somewhere safe
- Take off the flat tire and replace it with the spare
- Put the lugs back on and tighten them
- Lower the car and make sure that the lugs on the spare tire are secure
Now you can put everything away and drive to your destination. Just remember that a spare isn't really meant to be driven around on for that long. You should get to our mechanics and get new tires as soon as you can.
